地名の読みはいしはらであるが、駅名はいしわらと読む。秩父鉄道保線区は当駅の近くに置かれている。駅舎とホームは地下道で繋がっている。一部列車は急行秩父路の通過待ちを行う。駅周辺は比較的商業施設が充実している。
